Venice is one of the most ancient cities in the world still standing, with some buildings dating back 800 years, and a culture that traces back even longer. Once the center of the world between Eastern and Western trade exchange, it now stands as a gloriously charming, yet shabby chic canal based city along the Adriatic sea. This place seriously smells like coffee right from when you get off the plane...
I would never plan to be anywhere on time in this city without leaving early, perhaps the more positive sounding version of that is that you will never be bored in this cornucopia of twisting side roads, waterways, and quiet pastel walkways with fresh laundry drying on balcony's. The city also has excellent food, culture, and other entertainment which include but are not limited to: The Guggenheim Museum, St. Marks Square and Basilica (which features built in work by Titian), and the Doge's palace. And of course, any Gelato stand you find.
What is so wonderful about Venice is that it is not limited to the Italian Renaissance of art. It does of course have it, but you will also see back from Greco-Roman work in the Byzantine style, with Mosaics containing a single sheet of gold leaf reflecting in each tile, to DADA and Surrealism both reflected in Peggy Guggenheims collection on display and being created in studios today along with work inspired by that of the old masters.
